Nirmala Hospital, one of the pioneers in the field of Medical care in Malabar Region of Kerala had its humble beginning in August 1937 with the establishment of a small dispensary at Vellimadukunnu, Calicut, by the great Italian Jesuit missionary Fr. Edward Beretta S.J. In 1964 Rt. Rev. Dr. Aldo Maria Patroni, the Bishop of Calicut Diocese handed over the administration of Nirmala Hospital to the Congregation of Ursuline Sisters of Mary Immaculate. Mother Stefania Murelli, the then Delegate superior of the mission accepted the invitation and Sr. Aloysia Vaz was appointed as the first Administrator of the hospital. Over the years, keeping pace with the developments in modern medicine and health needs of the people, it has grown into a multi faceted medical institution with a 300 bedded multi-super specialty Hospital, catering to the needs of the patient population from all walks of life especially the poor and the needy, educational institutions like School of Nursing, College of Nursing, School of Medical Laboratory Technology and other supportive para-medical departments. Today we stand at par with other leading healthcare institutions and patients stand to benefit from our cost effective health care facilities upholding our motto "Healing Mission with a Human Touch"
