Desaposhini Public Library

As its name symbolizes, ‘Desaposhini’ library is a culture in itself . Transcending the conventional concept of libraries as just ‘a store-house of books, Desaposhini extends its services in the direction of socio-political and cultural development. Since its establishment in 1937, Desaposhini has been a dynamic conductor and promoter of Theater and various other performing arts. With a rich collection of around 45,000 books(Hard copies)and almost 1 Lakh E-books, 5 E Book Readers, this library functions as a knowledge bureau for any one who approaches it. The most coveted award in the library category, the E M S Puraskaram, which honors best libraries that has crossed 50 years, presented by the Kerala State Library Council, was awarded to Desaposhini on January 28, 2006. This brought laurels to the reputation of the library. Desaposhini has also received the Samadhanam Parameswaran Puraskaram instituted by the CICC Book House. Under the able leadership of its key members , myriad programmes and activities are frequently held here. Theater camps , film screenings, tailoring classes, chess coaching, drawing classes, nursery classes, dance trainings etc are some of them. Balasangam is one of the most interesting wings of this library, which is specially dedicated to children .This children’s union carries out unmatched classes and workshops for children and functions as a good platform for them to discover their innate talents and there by nurture them. In today’s era of scientific and technological advancements,we see that libraries are losing prominence. Even in this highly challenging milieu, Desaposhini is acquainting itself with time and modernization in order to serve and uplift the upcoming generation artistically, intellectually and socially.Desaposhini is an enterprise; a companionship, where a group of service-minded and selfless people work day and night for public welfare. It is this companionship that has taken this library to what it is today. Our future vision is to sustain and enhance knowledge,which is the most priceless of all wealth and also to propagate the positive and deep-rooted message of our slogan ; ‘Sarvathrika Sahodaryam’ (universal brotherhood). After all, we are all in the same planet. Let us know and grow together, both spiritually and mentally.
