The B.E.M. girls' higher secondary school of Calicut is one of the earliest instituation having been established in the year 1848. It originally bore the self explantory name of B.E.M. Anglo vernacular school at kallai. it was shifted to an ideal centre and prized place of the city close to mananchira in the year 1859 where it has continued to grow ever sdince. the year 1872 found the institution upgraded to a middle school and not long afterwards, in 1879 it took ultimate shape of a fulfledge High School. the school during this periods catered to the needs of both girls and boys. eventually the boys were shifted to the High School for boys founded at a distance hardly one kilometer where the present Malabar Christian College is situated. the residual school thus secured the rare distinction of becoming the first ever school exclusivelabar. Boarding facilities were provided there by attracting students from from far away place. this facility exists even now.
